Captain's Summary - Lent 2009
This term has been extremely successful for the club, all of the crews have done extremely well. The highlights include:
- Peterhouse is currently the best performing club on the Cam, leading the Michell Cup rankings.
- The 1st Women’s VIII and 2nd Men’s VIII won their oars by bumping up every day.
- The 1st Women’s VIII are now at the highest position they have ever been in the Lent races.
- Both the Men’s and Women’s 1st VIIIs returned to the 1st Division.
- The Men’s 1st VIII’s finishing position was the highest in 22 years.
As well as bumps, both the 1st Men’s VIII and 1st Women’s VIII competed off Cam this term. Both the 1st Men’s and Women’s crews were hoping to compete in Bedford, but flooding cancelled the race. Prior to bumps the 1st Women's VIII travelled to Oxford to compete in the Winter Isis League (coming 5th). A week after bumps the 1st Women’s VIII travelled to London to compete in Women’s Eights Head of the River Race. Starting near the end of the entries the crew finished 100 places higher and overall 12th (of 47) in the novice academic category. In March the 1st Men’s VIII, after a slight crew change, also went to London to compete in the Head of the River Race. The crew finished 177th (of 420) overall, 13th (of 85) in the Senior 4 category and amongst the top Cambridge Colleges. Despite not all of the 1st Lent VIII being able to race, the result is the best Peterhouse has produced in the time we have records available.
This term the lower boats also had a successful term which the 2nd Men’s VIII winning their blades. This term the 2nd Women trained as an IV and have made great progress which lays strong foundations for the future of the women’s squad. The 3rd Men’s VIII didn’t compete in bumps, however, they have made good progress this term.
The crews have done exceptionally well this term despite the challenging weather which often hampered training on the water: Lent training week saw the river largely frozen over. This was followed later in the term by blizzards and then flooding. Despite the adverse weather conditions the crews and coaches have done exceptionally well; their commitment and drive has carried them through and has made the term a resounding success.
Finally, thank you to everyone who has supported the club through coaching, on various towpaths around the country and financially through the Peterhouse Boat Club Fund. We are looking forward to what will hopefully be a successful Easter Term and are currently considering the logistics, funding and feasibility of a Peterhouse entry at Henley Royal Regatta.
